Request to ‘Umar ibn ‘Abdul-Aziz
When ‘Umar ibn ‘Abdul-Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him) was appointed as Caliph (Khalifah), he began with the cases related to transgression against the rights of others.
He began with his family and those closest to him. His family gathered together to meet with his aunt, whom he honoured and revered. They asked her to intercede for them regarding that which he intended to do. So when she spoke to ‘Umar about the matter, he said,
"Indeed Allah's Messenger (may the Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) followed a way and when he dies, his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all) followed the same path that the Messenger of Allah Messenger (may the Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) followed. When the matter was then taken up by others, they dragged it to the right and left of that path and by Allah, if my life is prolonged I will return the matter to the path that Allah's Messenger (may the Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) and his companions followed."
