Inheritance of the Prophet

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) related that one day he passed by the marketplace of Al-Madinah, and stood there and said to the owners of the shops, "O people of the marketplace, what has rendered you incapable?" They replied, "What are you referring to, O Abu Hurairah?" He said, "There is the inheritance of the prophet being distributed and you here? Will you not go there and take your share of the inheritance?"

They said, "Where is it (being distributed)?"

He replied, "In the mosque."

So they (people of the marketplace) raced out all together from the marketplace to the mosque to receive their share and Abu Hurairah remained there waiting for their return. They came back looking disappointed.

Abu Hurairah asked them what they found at the mosque. They replied "O Abu Hurairah, when we went to the mosque, we did not find any inheritance or estate that was being distributed."

Abu Hurairah asked them what they saw in the mosque. They recounted that they saw a group engaged in Prayer (Salah) and another busy in the recitation of the Qur'an and another group studying what is lawful (Halaal) and not lawful (Haraam). Then Abu Hurairah said to them, "Woe unto you, for that is the inheritance of the Prophet Muhammad (may the Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him)."

Moral

This story exemplifies the narration of the Prophet Muhammad (May the Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) in which he said: “Indeed the Scholars are the inheritors of the Prophets, and indeed the Prophets do not leave behind them the deenaar nor the dirham as inheritance. They leave behind only knowledge as inheritance. So whosoever acquires it acquires a huge fortune.” [Hasan: Related by Aboo Daawood (no. 3461) and Ibn Maajah (no. 223) from Abud-Dardaa‘ (radiyallaahu ’anhu).
